Kinematics of Thumb Opposition

چکیده
INTRODUCTION One of the most important hand functions is thumb opposition, which results from flexion, abduction and axial rotation at the carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints [1]. The thenar muscles, innervated by the median nerve, are critical for coordinated thumb movements. It is commonly observed that thumb opposition is impaired with median neuropathy [2]. The clinical method to assess thumb motion capability is to measure the distance between the thumb tip and the fingertip, or between the thumb tip and distal palmar crease [3]. Goniometric measurement quantifies thumb range of motion in isolated planes, but does not provide information of the dynamic relationship between flexion and rotation. The purpose of this study was to examine the 3D movement of the thumb during opposition.

Quantifying thumb opposition kinematics using dynamic computed tomography.
Current motion capture techniques all have shortcomings when applied to the 3D quantitative evaluation of thumb base motion. Dynamic CT might overcome these shortcomings but, so far, robustness of this technique in more than one specimen has not yet been demonstrated. The aim of the current study is to further evaluate the use of dynamic CT for quantification of thumb motion in a larger cadaver...

Background & Aim: In a variety of diseases thumb opposition is absent. Opponensplasty is the transfer of tendon to thumb in order to regain opposition in hands. This operation is perfomed with different tendons and operation techniques results of surgeries are different with various surgical techniques. In this study result of these operations in different patients was assessed in Shafa Reh...

The use of the abductor digiti minimi transfer to restore opposition in patients with hypoplasia of the thumb has been widely described in the literature. It has been found to be effective in restoring abduction, but less so in restoring the rotational component of opposition. In cases where there is concomitant supination of the thumb, abductor digiti minimi transfer alone would not result in ...
متن کاملNeuromechanics of the Hand: Functional Degrees of Freedom during Thumb Opposition
INTRODUCTION In classic mechanics, degrees of freedom (DOF) are defined as the minimum number of independent coordinates needed to describe a system’s position. The human musculoskeletal system has many mechanical DOF through which countless movements are accomplished. However, natural movements are characterized by the coordination of the DOF such that few vary independently. The concept of fu...
متن کاملTranslocation of the flexor pollicis longus tendon to restore opposition.
Many operations have been described to restore active opposition of the thumb, but all are dependent on the transplant of tendons and their rerouting to fulfil their new function. When there is no motor available for transplant-quite a common problem-the accepted procedure is to unite the first metacarpal bone to the second in the position of opposition. In 193 1 von Baeyer described a method o...
